I had tough time with the Korean words and definitions. The storyline was very choppy and confusing, though I was able to follow along.
While the book is interesting and raises many moral issues, I was hoping for a bit more insight into Korean history. The characters are well developed; the book is a relatively easy read.
I loved this book so much. Even though it covers many characters through time, it's very personal. A wonderful read.
This was an unbelievable book - the characters were so compelling. Knowing very little about Korean history, the book painted a vivid portrait of different periods in Korea during and after the war. Parts of it were tragic, but really gripping the entire way through. Can't recommend this highly enough!
The best books I've read are the ones where I am left thinking about the characters weeks after I've finished the book. If You Leave Me follows multiple characters over the span of about 20 years, so you become completely engrossed in their lives and the decisions they make. Sometimes I catch myself still thinking about Haemi. A refreshing spin on a complex love story that has the added bonus of teaching us about Korean culture.
For some reason I read the entire book, I think because it seemed like "something" had to happen other than the cyclical depressing series of events that continued again and again. Overall the book seemed pointless in a way to me when it could have been really good - and so depressing as I said above. The author had a strange way of describing disconnected feelings and thoughts for the characters which would change from one line to the next practically. It seemed there was no logic behind their actions. Strange upsetting events, all set in a cloudy odd universe - I really disliked this book -
This novel is truly a work of art. The story is powerful, the narrative is well crafted, and the prose is beautiful. I highly recommend this book.
