The Spanish Exile Islands of the Crown Volume 1 Jewel Allen 9781519382924 Books Reviews
Hottie on the cover much? A sweeping saga where so many things happen to Raul that it was hard to keep up. I liked Raul right away and his desire to not let his leg slow him down in life. He went after what he wanted even when he kept getting pushed down, but geez, poor guy. However, Conchita was the most obnoxious female. Ugh. This story is fast paced and filled with adventure. It was my first foray into this author's work and I must admit that I'm anxious to read the next one, but if this was a standalone I'd probably be super annoyed.
I RECEIVED THIS BOOK FOR FREE IN EXCHANGE FOR A REVIEW. THE MAIN CHARACTER RAUL CALDERONE IS A BOY IN SPAIN WHO DREAMS OF BEING A SOLDIER BUT HIS EARLY CHILDHOOD INJURY KEEPS HIM FROM BELIEVING HE COULD EVER BECOME ONE. HIS FRIEND CONCHITA PUSHES HIM AND TELLS HIM TO DO WHAT HE WANTS TO DO AND BELIEVE IN HIMSELF. HE FINALLY ENLISTS AND BECOMES CAPTAIN IN THE SPANISH ARMY AND HE GOES TO CONCHITA AND ASKS HER TO MARRY HIM. SHE IS TO SELFISH AND TURNS HIM DOWN. I LOVED THIS BOOK AND COULDNT WAIT FOR BOOK 2.
This is a great starter book for this series because it gives you such a good background on Raul. I just adore him. He goes through so much and continues to follow his dreams of being in the Spanish army even though he is labeled a cripple by his family and the people in his town.
As someone that has a disability I love how this is a big part of Rail's story, and how the author writes him overcoming it and becoming this amazing captain in the Spanish army.
Conchita Oh my I was rooting for her to see her real feeling for Raul through this entire book. The ending before he gets on the boat made me so sad how she acted and treated him like he wasn't worth her time. If I could smack a character through a book it would have been her.
I love that I found this amazing author that I will definitely be looking for more books by her. She is a must read author for sure.

I was given a free copy for my honest opinion. This story had great possibilities but too many cliffhangers. Warning... there may be spoilers ahead... I didn't understand why the people were rebelling, when will Raul catch a break, was father Zamora guilty, does the sword master show up again, what about Leandro, does anything ever come from being the lost son of a high born dead guy? There are many more questions than that which need answering. This author weaves a fine tale but left me frustrated more than I wanted. Raul has a long life ahead but I really hope someone better than Conchita is at his side. I guess being young and crushing on your friends sister leaves a big hole but one day he needs to see that despite her beauty and occasional kindness she has a selfish heart that could hurt his hope for a healthy future family. The good news is that I dreamed of a happy ending and the author can still pull out a "Happily Ever After" that ties all the loose ends together to my satisfaction. Lol.
The image on the cover drew me in at first sight. I was very intrigued by this story. The hero goes through a lot and my heart ached for him so often, but his heart and personality helped him endure the trials he faced and the trouble that kept finding him so often. It's not a fast easy read but has a lot of meat to the story. If you like historical fiction with a flare for real world feel, this story is for you.
Let me just get this out--Yes, right at the start so everyone will know. I sort of felt a personal stake or kinship to this story because it mentioned the Philippines. I know it's shallow or pathetic but I feel proud finding books written by a non-Filipino and mentions a Filipino character or a place in my country in his/her story. As long as it speaks of good things about my country and my people, it makes my heart swell. It's a far cry from hearing about terrorists and terrorism on the news. I am even prouder of this story because the writer is part Filipino.
For some who don't know, the Philippines was under the Spanish rule for 333 years. Yes, the big three. In those more than three centuries, we have been influenced by the Spaniards greatly, even some of the common and undesirable Filipino traits have been unfortunately were acquired from the Spanish rulers. Those three centuries were unfortunately not the best years of our history. A lot of maltreatment and abuses were suffered. If only, good things and influences were gained from those years of rule, then maybe, my country would have probably been better for it.
So, history aside, this story is coined from those years of Spanish rule. The main protagonist, Raul Calderon, a Spanish born with one bad leg that causes him to limp, dreams of joining the military. By some unfortunate incident, he met a man that would become his fencing tutor, after saving them from road bandits. This man became Raul's mentor and fanned more his yearning to become a military man. And he did become one. He rose up the ranks and became a captain. By another unfortunate event, he was charged of a crime against the crown and was later exiled to the Philippine Islands.
I love historical fiction. I was never fond of history in my student days. I guess, I would owe this love for this genre on Clive Cussler. I have been fascinated by his stories that history came to be a very interesting subject for me. Especially after having travelled to some historic places in Asia, I became even more interested in history. So, no wonder this book got my fancy.
I was even more enamored when I learned how this story came to be. It is for me the greatest adventure--to be able to discover some proof that you were descended from some people who had done something important and became part of history. This was what urged the author to come up with this story, though this may in part contain fiction.
The story of Raul Calderon is a story that a lot of people can relate to. Fighting for your country and fighting for love. Which of the two carries a heavier weight? Which would you give up, betray and save? Raul Calderon represents a good Spanish man who loves his country and who has seen the sufferings of war. He's torn between doing his duty and doing what's right.
I give this book 4/5 swords. This is a well-written story of adventure. It seemed as if it was not fiction at all. It's a pleasure knowing you Capt. Raul Calderon.
She'll have no problem attracting a smile, especially if Good Fortune is a man.
